LED Profiles and Aluminium Channels

What size LED profile do you need?

Measure the width of your LED strip, not the profile. A channel quoted as 17x8mm is its outside dimension; the usable internal width is what has to clear your tape. Most single-colour strip is 8mm or 10mm wide, RGB and RGBW run 10mm to 12mm, and COB sits around 8mm to 10mm.

Leave a little room. A 10mm strip in a channel with exactly 10mm of internal width is a fight to seat and impossible to adjust once the adhesive grabs. Every listing states the maximum tape width it takes, so match that figure against your strip and ignore the outside dimensions entirely.

Which profile suits my mounting method?

Decide how it fixes before you choose a section. Surface profiles screw onto a finished face. Recessed profiles drop into a routed groove. Plaster-in profiles are skimmed into the ceiling. Corner profiles sit in an internal angle at 45 degrees. Bendable profiles follow a curve.

• Nothing to cut into: surface mount. Fastest fit, fully removable, no making good.
• Joinery or a routed groove: recessed. The flange covers a rough edge.
• Plasterboard ceiling, no visible trim: plaster-in, fitted before skim.
• Internal corner, shelf edge or staircase: corner profile, which aims light out from the angle.
• The run curves: bendable. Standard extrusion kinks.

What is the difference between recessed and plaster-in?

Recessed profiles have visible side flanges that sit on the surface and hide the routed edge. Plaster-in profiles carry a wider flange designed to be skimmed over, so the finished ceiling shows a slot of light and no aluminium at all.

• Recessed: quicker, forgiving of a rough cut, and removable later. A thin border stays visible.
• Plaster-in: trimless. Taped and plastered in so the housing disappears. Permanent once finished.
• Depth decides it: measure the void first. A 7mm-deep channel fits where a 14mm one will not.

Which LED profile bends around curves?

Only a bendable profile. Standard aluminium extrusion kinks or splits if forced. Bendable profiles are scored along their length so they flex by hand into curves, arches and lettering while the strip stays flat inside the channel.

• Curved coves and circular details: bendable aluminium channel follows the radius without segmenting.
• Signage and lettering: bendable neon flex track holds the flex through tight shapes.
• Bendable plaster-in: curves to roughly a 200mm radius and still skims flush.

Can you use an LED profile outdoors?

The profile itself is not what makes an installation weatherproof — the strip inside it is. An open aluminium channel with a push-in cover is IP20 as a housing. Outdoors, the water protection has to come from an IP65, IP67 or IP68 strip or neon flex sealed within it.

Our in-ground profiles are built for exterior use, set flush into paving, decking and driveways, and the aluminium gives mechanical protection plus a flush finish underfoot. Specify flex rated for the location, and keep drivers and joints indoors or inside a rated enclosure.

What lengths do LED profiles come in?

Standard stock lengths are 1 metre, 2 metres, 2.45 metres and 3 metres depending on the section. Longer runs are made by butting lengths end to end, which leaves a fine joint line rather than a visible gap when cut squarely.

Bear in mind that 2 metre and longer profiles are rigid oversized items and travel on a dedicated long-goods service, so they are handled separately from the rest of an order. If a run needs a specific length, call and we will advise on the cleanest way to break it up.

Does the diffuser cost you light?

Yes, and it is worth it. An opal diffuser absorbs roughly 15 to 30 per cent of raw output depending on thickness. What you get back is a single continuous line instead of a row of visible dots, and far less glare at eye level.

If maximum brightness matters more than appearance, a clear cover loses very little but shows the individual diodes. The practical answer is to allow for the loss at the specification stage: pick a strip with more lumens per metre rather than removing the diffuser from a run people will look at directly.

How do you cut and fit an aluminium LED channel?

Cut it with a fine-tooth hacksaw or a mitre saw with a non-ferrous blade, deburr the cut end, then fix the base, seat the strip, clip in the diffuser and finish with end caps.

1. Measure and cut the channel to length with a fine-tooth blade. Support it along its length so the section does not distort.
2. File the cut edge so the diffuser still slides in and the end cap seats flush.
3. Fix the base with the supplied clips or screws, checking the run is straight before committing.
4. Seat the strip along the channel, pressing evenly. Never power a strip while it is still coiled — heat builds and destroys the adhesive.
5. Clip in the diffuser and fit the end caps, taking the cable out through the drilled cap.

Aluminium or PVC channel for neon flex?

Aluminium is rigid, draws heat away and protects the flex mechanically. PVC is lighter, cheaper and easier to cut, and suits indoor runs where the flex only needs holding straight rather than shielding.

For an exposed wall run, a commercial fit-out or anywhere the flex could be knocked, use aluminium. For a straight indoor run behind a bulkhead or above a cornice, PVC does the job for less. Both are stocked from 6x12mm through 16x16mm to match the common neon flex sections.
