Red under shelf lighting turns open shelving into a display instead of storage. Red SCOB runs as one dot-free line along the shelf underside rather than a row of pinpoints, so a record collection gets an even wash with no hotspots.

Cut to order in a single length from 1 to 10 metres, this strip carries 272 LEDs per metre and draws 9W per metre on 24V DC from a board 10mm wide, narrow enough to hide inside a shallow shelf recess. It is IP20: indoor dry shelving only, never a bathroom zone and never outdoors.

Where does red shelf lighting work best?

Red suits shelving meant to be looked at rather than worked on: display shelves of vinyl and comics, games room shelving behind a console, gym racking, and the back shelves of a home bar. At 9W per metre it saturates the objects on the shelf without flooding the whole room.

On a floating shelf, fix the 10mm strip to the front third of the underside so the beam falls onto what sits below, not into the eye. Red flattens fine print, so keep it off a reading bookshelf.

Does a single-colour red strip need a controller?

No controller is needed. This is one fixed red channel, so there is nothing to mix and nothing to programme: it wires to a 24V constant-voltage driver and an ordinary switch. Colour-changing strips need a controller because their channels are blended electronically, while a single channel simply holds a clean 24V feed.

Size the driver roughly 20% above total load: a 5 metre run pulls 45W, so allow headroom above that when you compare 24V constant-voltage drivers. Never power the reel while it is coiled, and never fix the strip to bare metal without insulation or an aluminium profile.

How do I size and cut it to a shelf?

Measure the shelf underside, then round down to the nearest cut mark. This strip cuts every 29.4mm, so a 1,200mm shelf finishes at 1,176mm of lit length. Ordering the exact run between 1 and 10 metres usually removes the need to cut at all in 2026.

1. Measure the underside: take the clear span, less any bracket sitting proud.
2. Round down: divide by 29.4mm and drop the remainder.
3. Order per shelf: one length per shelf beats a strip snaked between levels.
